Termites have been a concern to scientists in the Southeastern United States for many years. Termites are common across the Southeastern United States because of the area’s warm climate. In 1978, Forest Service scientists Lonnie Williams and Richard V. Smythe were interested in the cost of termites and beetles to homeowners. The scientists wanted to know: What are the costs to homeowners of managing termites and beetles across 11 Southeastern States?
