My favorite science experiences have involved observing the positive things that can come from neighborhood greening. Greening can bring jobs to a community. In addition, learning about trees, participating in tree-planting events, and caring for and maintaining the trees are activities that can bring neighbors together and help us trust one another and feel a common purpose.

As a kid, I joined a club at my school called LeadersCorps. I will never forget bringing our shovels, which we needed for a tree planting activity, on the bus to school one day. While we were planting trees, the neighbors came out to tell us how much they appreciated what we were doing, and they promised to water the trees and care for them. Coincidentally, my father moved to a house right across the street from those trees, and now whenever I go to visit him I can see the trees. They provide more shade and beauty as the years go by.
