biologist
(bī ä lə jist): A scientist who studies living organisms and life processes.
bioluminescence
(bī ō lü mə ne sən(t)s): (1) The emission of light from living organisms (such as fireflies, dinoflagellates, and bacteria) as the result of internal, typically oxidative chemical reactions; (2) the light so produced.
biomass
(bī ō mas): The amount of living matter (in a unit area or volume of habitat).
biome
(bī ōm): A major ecological community type (such as tropical rainforest, grassland, or desert).
biophysical
(bī ō fi zi kǝl): Living and nonliving parts of the environment, such as soil or moisture, that influence organisms or natural events.
biosphere
(bī ə sfir): (1) The part of the world where life can exist; (2) living organisms together with their environment.
biotic
(bī ä tik): Of, relating to, or caused by living organisms.
blowdown
(blō daὑn): (1) An instance of trees being blown down by the wind; (2) a tree blown down, also an area of such trees.
bole
(bōl): Tree trunk.
bolide
(bō līd): A large meteor or fireball; especially, one that explodes.
boreal
(bȯr ē ǝl): Of, relating to, or located or growing in northern or mountainous regions, characterized especially by dominance of coniferous forests.
borough
(bǝr ō): In this case, one of the five main sections of New York City; the boroughs are the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.
bosque
(bäsk): A wooded area near water or wetland areas.
breed
(brēd): To produce offspring by sexual reproduction.
breeding
(bred iŋ): Producing offspring by hatching or the carrying of young in the uterus.
breeding habitat
(brē diŋ ha bə tat): Environment where an animal nests and reproduces as opposed to where it lives during the rest of the year.
breeding pattern
(brē diŋ pa tərn): When and how animals reproduce, including how many young an animal has and how often.
broadleaf
(brȯd lēf): Having broad leaves; specifically, having leaves that are not needles.
brood cell
(brüd sel): A cell in a bee nest used for the rearing of a larva.
browse
(brau̇z): To eat (tender shoots, twigs, leaves of trees and shrubs, etc.); graze.
