totem pole
(tō təm pȯl): A pole carved and painted with totems and set up by native Alaskan peoples. A totem is an honored symbol.
toxic
Containing or being a poisonous material, which may be capable of causing death or serious illness.
traditional
(trə di shə nəl): Adhering to past practices or established conventions; based on custom.
trajectory
(trə jek t(ə-)rē): The curved path along which something (such as a rocket) moves through the air or through space.
trampling
(tram p(ǝ) liŋ): Walking or traveling heavily so as to bruise, crush, or injure things underfoot.
transcribe
(tran(t) skrīb): To make a copy of (dictated or recorded matter) in longhand or on a machine (as a computer).
transect
(tran(t) sekt): A sample area usually in the form of a long continuous strip.
transition
(tran zi shən): A changing from one state, stage, place, or subject to another.
transmission
(tran(t)s mi shən): The process of transferring from one person, animal, or place, to another.
transmit
(trans mit): To transfer from one person, animal, or place, to another.
transpiration
(tran(t)s pə rā shən): The process by which plants give off water vapor through the stomata in their leaves.
treatment
(trēt mǝnt): Something that researchers administer or change in experimental units to test something or run a trial.
tremor
(tre mər): A small movement of the earth before or after an earthquake.
trend
(trend): The general movement over time of a statistically detectable change.
Tribal
(trī bǝl): Of, relating to, or characteristic of a Tribe, in this case an American Indian Tribe.
tributary
(tri byə ter ē): A stream that flows into a larger stream or river or into a lake.
tribute
(tri byüt): A gift or service showing respect, gratitude, or affection.
tropical
(trä pi kǝl): Of, relating to, occurring in, or used in the tropics, which is the area between two parallels of the earth's latitude that are approximately 23½ degrees north of the equator and approximately 23½ degrees south of the equator.
tropics
(träp iks): The region that surrounds the equator and goes from 23.5 degrees north latitude to 23.5 degrees south latitude.
troposphere
(trō pǝ sfir): The portion of the atmosphere which extends from the Earth's surface to the bottom of the stratosphere (a distance of about 7 miles or 11 kilometers) and in which temperature generally decreases rapidly with altitude.
