statistical test

(stǝ ti sti kǝl test): A test that uses numbers and probability to determine relationship.

statistics

(stə tis tiks): The branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data.

status

(stat ǝs or stāt ǝs): A particular state or condition.

stem

(stem): The main trunk of a plant; a plant part that supports another.

steward

(stü ǝrd): One who carefully and responsibly manages something entrusted to one's care.

stewardship

(stü ǝrd ship): The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.

stigma

(stig mǝ): On the female flower, the sticky knob which collects pollen from pollinators.

stimulate

(stīm ü lāt): To excite to activity, greater activity, or growth.

stormwater

(stȯrm wȯ tǝr): Rainwater produced by a storm; rainwater that runs off surfaces and away from the area it originally falls (definition from the Environmental Protection Agency).

stratosphere

(stra tə sfir): An upper portion of the atmosphere above the troposphere where temperature changes little and clouds rarely form.

stream

(strēm): A body of running water—such as a river, creek, or brook—flowing on Earth.

streamflow

(strēm flō): The movement of water in streams, rivers, and other channels.

strenuous

(stren yə wəs): Showing or requiring great energy.

stressed

(strest): Subjected to or affected by strain or pressure.

structured

(strək chərd): Organized.

subsistence

(sǝb si stǝn(t)s): The minimum (like food and shelter) necessary to support life; a source or means of obtaining the necessities of life.

subspecies

(səb spē shēz): A category in biological classification that ranks immediately below a species; designates a population of a particular geographic region that is genetically distinguishable from other such populations of the same species. A subspecies is capable of interbreeding successfully with other populations of the same species where its range overlaps theirs.

subterranean

(səb tə nē ən): Located or living under the surface of the ground.

suburb

( bər bən): A smaller community close to a city.

succession

(sǝk se shǝn): A series of one-way changes in the composition of a biological community in which one group of plants or animals is replaced by a different group.
