solitary

( lǝ ter ē): Growing or living alone.

solitude

( lə tüd): The quality or state of being alone or remote from society.

soluble

(säl yə bəl): Capable of being dissolved in or as if in a liquid, especially water.

solve

(sälv): To find the correct answer to.

spatial

(spā shəl): Of, relating to, or involved in the perception of relationships (as of objects) in space.

spawn

(spän): To produce young especially in large numbers.

spearfisher

(spir fish ǝr): A person who fishes with a spear.

specialization

(spe sh(ǝ) lǝ shǝn): Being designed, trained, or fitted for one particular purpose or job or area of study.

specialized

(spe shə līzd): Designed, trained, or fitted for one particular purpose or occupation.

species

(spē sēz or spē shēz): A category of living things that ranks below a genus, is made up of related individuals able to produce fertile offspring, and is identified by a two-part scientific name.

specification

(spe sǝ fǝ shǝn): A description of work to be done or materials to be used—usually used in plural.

specimen

(spes (ǝ) mǝn): A part or a single thing that shows what the whole thing or group is like.

spectrometer

(spek trä mə tər): An instrument that spreads particles or radiation into an ordered sequence (such as by mass or energy).

speculate

(spe kyǝ lāt): To think or wonder about a subject; to theorize.

speleothem

(spē lē ō thǝm): A cave formation formed by groundwater.

spoil

(spȯi(-ə)l): (noun) Earth and rock that has been excavated or dredged.

spore

(spȯ(ǝ)r): A reproductive body that is produced by fungi and by some plants and microorganisms (like ferns and bacteria) and that usually consists of a single cell and is able to produce a new individual either by developing by itself or after fusion with another spore.

spring

(spriŋ): The season between winter and summer.

stability

(stǝ bi lǝ tē): The quality, state, or degree of being stable, such as the strength to stand or endure.

stable isotope

(stā bəl ī sə tōp): An isotope that shows no tendency to undergo radioactive decomposition.
