A

antenna

(an ten uh): A set of wires used to send and receive signals.

anther

(an(t) thǝr): The part of the stamen of a flower that produces and contains pollen and is usually borne on a stalk.

(an(t) thə ə nən): Any of various soluble pigments producing blue to red coloring in flowers and plants.

anthracnose

(an thrak nōs): Any of numerous destructive plant diseases caused by imperfect fungi and characterized especially by necrotic lesions (dark spots and blisters).

appendix

(ə pen diks): (plural: appendixes or appendices) Additional material attached at the end of a piece of writing.

aquatic

kwä tik): Growing or living in or often found in water.

aquifer

(a kwǝ fǝr): A water-bearing layer of rock, sand, or gravel capable of absorbing water.

archaeological

(är kē ə ji kəl): Having to do with the scientific study of material remains (such as tools, pottery, jewelry, stone walls, and monuments) of past human life and activities.

(är kē ä lə jist): A scientist who studies the material remains (such as tools, pottery, jewelry, stone walls, and monuments) of past human life and activities.

(är kə tekt): A person who designs buildings and advises in their construction.

arctic

(ärk tik): Of, relating to, or suitable for use at the north pole or the region around it.

arid

(a rəd): Very dry; especially, not having enough rainfall to support agriculture.

aromatic

(a rə ma tik): Having a strong smell.

arson

(är sǝn): The illegal burning of a building or other property.

arsonist

(är sǝ nist): One who commits arson.

arthropod

(är thrə päd): Any of a phylum of invertebrate animals (such as insects, arachnids, and crustaceans) having a segmented body, jointed limbs, and a shell of chitin that is shed periodically.

artifact

(är ti fakt): A usually simple object (such as a tool or ornament) showing human work and representing a culture or a stage in the development of a culture.
