pathogen
(path ǝ jǝn): A germ (such as a bacterium or virus) that causes disease.
patient
(pā shənt): Able to wait calmly.
pattern
(pa tәrn): Something that happens in a regular or repeated way.
peer review
(pir ri vyü): A process by which something proposed (such as for research or publication) is evaluated by a group of experts in the appropriate field.
pelagic
(pə la jik): Of, relating to, or living or occurring in the open sea.
perch
(pǝrch): A support, like a branch, on which a bird rests.
perennial
(pǝ ren ē ǝl): Present at all seasons of the year.
perimeter
(pə ri mə tər): A line or strip bounding or protecting an area.
periodic
(pir ē ä dik): Occurring at regular intervals.
periodically
(pir ē ä di k(ǝ) lē): At regular intervals of time; from time to time.
persistence
(pər si stən(t)s): The state of occurring or existing beyond the usual, expected, or normal time.
pervasive
(pər vā siv): Spread throughout so thoroughly as to be seen or felt everywhere.
pesticide
(pes tə sīd): A substance that is used to kill animals or insects that are harmful to humans or human activities (like agriculture).
petition
(pə ti shən): (1) (verb) To make a formal written request made to an authority or organized body (such as a court); (2) (noun) a written request or call for change signed by many people in support of a shared cause or concern.
petri dish
(pē trē dish): A small shallow dish of thin glass or plastic with a loose cover used especially for cultures of bacteria.
pH
(pē āch): A number used in expressing acidity or alkalinity on a scale whose values run from 0 to 14 with 7 representing neutrality, numbers less than 7 increasing acidity, and numbers greater than 7 increasing alkalinity.
pharmaceutical
(fär mə süt i kəl): Of, relating to, or involved in pharmacy or the manufacture and sale of medicinal drugs.
phenology
(fi nä lə jē): A branch of science dealing with the relationship between climate and periodic biological phenomena (such as bird migration or plant flowering).
pheromone
(fair uh mon): A chemical given off by certain animals to attract mates, mark trails, etc.
philosophy
(fǝ lä sǝ fē): Someone's basic beliefs about the way people should live.
