mean

(meen): The average in a set of numbers.

meander

(mē an dər): To follow a winding or complicated course.

meaning

( niŋ): Significance or value.

mechanics

(mi ka niks): The details of the way something works or is done.

median

( dē ən): A value in a series arranged from smallest to largest below and above which there are an equal number of values or which is the average of the two middle values if there is no one middle value.

medicinal

(mə dis nəl ordi sə nəl): Tending or used to cure disease or relieve pain.

megagram

(meg uh gram): A unit of mass equal to 1,000,000 grams. A megagram is equal to 1.1 ton, or 2,200 pounds. Symbol: Mg

megawatt hours

(meg uh wat ow ürs): one joule of energy per second. If a 100-watt light bulb is turned on for 1 hour, the energy used is 100 watt-hours.

mentor

(men tȯr): To tutor or serve as a trusted counselor or guide.

mesa

( sə): A flat-topped hill or small plateau with steep sides.

metabolize

(mə ta bə līz): To build up or break down the complex substances in the cells of living things (in order to provide essential energy for vital processes and activities and to absorb new material).

metamorphosis

(me tǝ mȯr fǝ sǝs): The process of basic and usually rather sudden change in the form and habits of some animals during transformation from an immature stage (as a tadpole or a caterpillar) to an adult stage (as a frog or a butterfly).

meteorological

(mē tē ǝ rǝ ji kǝl): Having to do with the atmosphere, weather, or weather forecasting.

methyl bromide

(me thəl brō mīd): A poisonous gaseous compound used chiefly as a fumigant against rodents, worms, and insects.

metric system

(me trik si stǝm): A system of weights and measures based on the meter and on the kilogram.

metropolitan

(me trə lə tən): Of, or relating to, a large city and the surrounding cities and towns.

microbe

( krōb): An organism (such as a bacterium) of microscopic or less than microscopic size; a germ.

microbial

(mī krō bē əl): Of, involving, caused by, or being microbes.

microclimate

( krō klī mət): The essentially uniform local climate of a usually small site or habitat.

microorganism

(mī krō ȯr gə ni zəm): An organism or life form of microscopic size.
