A

alkalinity

(al kə li nə tē): Of, relating to, containing, or having the properties of an alkali or alkali metal; basic. An alkali has a pH of more than 7.

alluvial soil

lü vē əl soi(ə)l): Soil material (such as clay, silt, sand, or gravel) deposited by running water.

aloha

(h)ä): Hawaiian word meaning love, compassion, peace, mercy, or connection and can be used at a meeting or parting; there is no exact equivalent word in English.

alpine

(al pīn): Of, relating to, or growing on mountain slopes above the highest elevation where trees grow.

alternative

(ὁl tǝr nǝ tiv): One of two or more things, courses, or propositions to be chosen.

altitude

(al tə tüd): The vertical distance of an object above a given level (such as sea level).

(al tuh tud): Height; especially, the height above sea level.

altitude sickness

(al tə t(y)üd sik nəs): The effects (such as headache, nausea, or swelling of the brain) of oxygen deficiency in the blood and tissues that develop at high altitudes with reduced atmospheric pressure.

amateur

(a mə chər): A person who takes part in an activity (such as a study or sport) for pleasure and not for pay.

amendment

men(d) mənt): A change in wording or meaning especially in a law, bill, or motion.

amenity

me nǝ tē): Something that helps to provide comfort, convenience, or enjoyment.

American Indian

mer ə kən in dē ən): A person who is part of the first communities that lived or still live in North America or South America.

amphibian

(am fi bē ǝn): Any of a class (Amphibia) of cold-blooded vertebrates (such as frogs, toads, or salamanders) that have many characteristics that place them between fish and reptiles and having gilled aquatic larvae and air-breathing adults.

anaerobic

(an ǝ bik): Living, active, occurring, or existing in the absence of free oxygen.

analysis

na lǝ sǝs): An examination of a whole to discover its elements and their relations.

analyze

(a nǝ līz): To study or find out the nature and relationship of the parts of something.

analyzing

ancestor

(an se stür): An early kind of animal from which later kinds have developed.

angler

( glər): A person who catches fish with a hook and fishing line.

Anglo-American

(aŋ glō ə mer ə kən): A North American whose native language is English and especially whose culture is of European origin.

annual

(an yə(-wə)l): (1) Covering the period of a year; (2) occurring or happening every year or once a year.
