gorge

(gȯrj): (verb) To eat greedily; to stuff oneself.

governance

( vər nən(t)s): The act or process of governing or overseeing the control and direction of something (such as a country or an organization).

gradient

(grā dē ənt): (1) Slope; upward or downward slant or inclination or degree of slant; (2) a continuous graded change in measure, activity, or substance.

grassland

(gras land): Land covered with herbs (like grasses and clover) rather than shrubs and trees.

greenhouse effect

(grēn hau̇s i fekt): A warming of Earth’s surface and the air above it caused by gases in the air that trap energy from the Sun.

greening

(grē niŋ): Rejuvenating or revitalizing an area, especially by adding or tending plants.

groundwater

(grau̇nd wȯ tǝr): Water within the earth, especially that which supplies wells and springs.

habitat

(ha bә tat): The place or environment where a plant or animal naturally or normally lives and grows.

(ha bǝ tat frag men shǝn): When a place where an animal or plant naturally lives and grows is broken or separated into distinct parts.

(ha bə shən): The act of inhabiting or living in a place.

(härd wud): The wood of a tree (such as an oak or maple) that produces flowers and usually has broad leaves as compared to the wood of a tree that bears cones and has needlelike leaves.

(ha zər dəs): Involving or exposing one to risk; dangerous; risky.

(hed wȯ tərz): The beginning and upper part of a stream.

(hel thē): Not sick; in good health.

(hek tär): A unit of area equal to 10,000 square meters.

herbaceous

((h)ər shəs): Of, relating to, or having the characteristics of an herb.

herbicide

((h)ər bə sīd): A substance used to destroy or slow plant growth.
