dilemma

(də le mə): A usually undesirable or unpleasant choice; a problem involving a difficult choice.

disastrous

(di za strəs): Attended by or causing suffering or disaster.

discharge

(dis chärj): (verb) To give outlet or vent to something; to emit.

discover

(dis vәr): To search and to find.

discovery

(dә skәv (ә) rē): Finding or learning something for the first time.

dispersal

(di spər səl): The process or result of the spreading of organisms from one place to another.

disperse

(di spǝrs): To cause to become spread widely; scatter.

displace

(di splās): To force (people or animals) to leave the area where they live.

disrupt

(dis rəpt): To interrupt the normal progress or activity of something.

dissertation

(di sǝr shǝn): An extended usually written treatment of a subject, specifically one submitted for a doctorate.

dissipate

(di sə pāt): To break up and scatter or vanish.

distilled water

(di stild wȯ tər): Water that has been freed of dissolved or suspended solids and from organisms by distillation (as for medical or chemical purposes).

distinguish

(di stiŋ (g)wish): (1) To recognize one thing from others by some mark or quality; (2) to know or point out the difference.

distort

(di stȯrt): To twist out of a natural, normal, or original shape or condition.

distribution

(di strǝ byü shǝn): The natural geographic range of a living thing.

disturbance

(di stür bǝn(t)s): A short-term change in the environment that leads to a larger ecosystem change.

diverse

(dī vǝrs): Differing from one another.

diversion

(də vər zhən): The act or an instance of diverting or straying from a course, activity, or use.

diversion dam

(dǝ vǝr zhǝn dam): A barrier that diverts all or a portion of the flow of a river from its natural course.

diversity

(dǝ vǝr si tē): The condition of having or being composed of differing elements; variety.
