continental

(kän tə nen təl): Of, relating to, or characteristic of a continent.

control

(kǝn trōl): A variable factor that has been kept constant and which is used as a standard of comparison to the experimental component in a controlled experiment.

conventional

(kän ven chun ul): Ordinary.

convert

(kən vərt): To change from one form or function to another.

coordinate

(kō ȯrd nət): Any of a set of numbers used to locate a point on a line or surface or in space.

coppice

( pəs): Forest originating mainly from shoots or root suckers rather than seed.

core

(kȯr): (verb) To remove a core from (like taking a sample from a tree's core with a drill).

correspondent

(kȯr ə  spän dənt): In the World's Forests editions, a representative from each country who gathered and sent information to FAO.

cottonwood

( tǝn wu̇d): Any of several poplars having seeds with cottony hairs.

crevice

(kre vəs): A narrow opening caused by a crack or a split.

criteria

(krī tir ē ə): (singular: criterion) A standard on which a judgment or decision may be based.

cross-pollinate

(krȯs lǝ nāt): To pollinate (a flower or plant) with pollen from another flower or plant.

crossbow

(krȯs bō): A short bow mounted crosswise near the end of a wooden stock that shoots short arrows.

crown

(krau̇n): The highest part of the leaves and branches of a tree or shrub.

crystallize

(kri stə līz): To cause to form crystals or assume crystalline form.

cubic foot

(kyü bik fu̇t): A unit of volume equal to a cube one foot long on each side.

cultivate

(kəl tə vāt): To prepare and use for the raising of crops; also, to loosen or break up the soil about (growing plants).
