A geologist studies Earth, the materials of which Earth is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them.
Geology is an observational science. By careful observation, I am able to investigate and interpret geological issues through remote sensing and field investigations.
How much mineralization is occurring? What is the economic opportunity of the mineralization? Mineralization is when minerals and elements within rock formations become exposed at certain places on Earth. I want to know how much mineralization occurs in a location and if money can be made from it.
I routinely use a global positioning system (GPS) unit in my field work. The GPS unit is capable of receiving information from satellites to accurately calculate its geographical location.
I participated in a geothermal exploration project. A deep well was drilled to determine the Earth’s temperature at a particular location. This information could be used to support constructing a geothermal power plant in the future.
In college, I took a geology class to satisfy science requirements, and I fell in love with geology. After completing that entry level geology course, I knew that I wanted to be a scientist, specifically a geologist.
