One of my favorite experiences as a scientist was a few years ago. A group of neighbors approached our study team—we thought they were going to complain about the noise the auger was making. Instead, they just wanted to say that they were happy that someone had finally come to clean and green the abandoned lots near their homes. They felt like they could breathe a little easier, weren’t scared to walk on their street, and their kids now had a pocket park near home.
