FACTivity – Snake, Rattle, and Roll

PDF preview of the 'Snake, Rattle, and Roll' FACTivity.

In this FACTivity, you will do an experiment similar to the one the scientists did in "Snake, Rattle, and Roll," except you will be studying insects on the ground instead of snakes. In groups, you will monitor a section of your schoolyard or other outdoor area for the presence of ground-level insects. To do this, you will build two pitfall traps and two drift fences.

The question you will answer in this FACTivity is: What types of insects live on the grounds of our school?

Materials:

  • 16-ounce plastic cups
  • Landscape fabric (or some type of thin material that can be used to make a drift fence)
