I plan and implement fuels-related work in the district. Spring and fall are my busy seasons, implementing prescribed burns and completing field work.
Teamwork is key to success in both planning and implementing fuels-related work.
Burn windows are a challenge. Burn windows are a period of time when environmental variables are balanced so prescribed fires can accomplish their objectives. We are constantly looking for the right weather and smoke dispersals.
Geographic information system (GIS) skills are imperative in my job. Maps and reporting require a deep understanding of GIS.
Wildland fires are getting larger and the season in which they burn is getting longer. It’s a challenge that faces the agency, one which will require change.
I knew I wanted to fight fire right out of high school. I got my first job with the Forest Service as soon as I graduated.
