I am responsible for the nursery’s program of work overseeing the production of conifer seedlings for reforestation on lands managed by the Forest Service. For the Moon Trees project, I was responsible for selecting and donating some of the tree seeds.
My advice is if you love working with plants and the challenge of producing seedlings for reforestation and restoration, this is the career path to follow. Knowing that you have an impact and are contributing to reforestation efforts is very rewarding.
In my job, there are several questions dealing with business operations of the nursery. One question I always ask is: “How can we be more efficient when producing high-quality seed for our clients?”
In my current position, the technology I use is mostly computers and computer programs. All of our tree cold storage rooms and our seed bank freezers operate with computer software. All of our business data are stored in a database system that we rely on to run our nursery.
I think the most exciting discovery for me has been that there are careers like mine available to pursue. It has allowed me to participate in a field that is of great interest to me.
In 1987, I came to the Coeur d’Alene Nursery to visit with the nursery manager and staff to discuss the development of seed orchards for the production of conifer seed for reforestation. That visit and the relationships I made with the staff made me pursue my nursery career.
